that was quick!
According to the Washington Post it didn't take Sharon but five days from the election of Abu Mazin before he's cut off all ties with him (until the terror ends, of course). Now that's what you call a small window of opportunity. To all those thinking the election was going to radically change the dynamic: I'm sorry.
Gaza Rocket Attack Kills 2 in Sderot, Israel
This story has been buried in most of the U.S. media, but Haaretz has reported that a Qassam rocket fired from the Gaza strip has killed two people and critically wounded another in the Israeli town of Sderot.
This is significant because although militants in Gaza (Hamas has claimed responsibility for this attack) routinely fire rockets into Israel, none have ever caused injuries or deaths until the attack today.
This follows a period of relative safety, at least inside Israel -- no Israeli civilians have been killed in almost three months -- but is a reminder that things are not getting better.
A Frightening Poll in Haaretz
From Haaretz via The American Errorist comes this report of an opinion poll done by Haifa University which outlines an alarmingly pervasive racism among the Israeli public:
The survey indicates that 63.7 percent of the Jewish respondents said the government should encourage Israeli Arabs to emigrate. Almost half of the Jewish respondents - 48.6 percent - said the treatment that Arabs in Israel receive from the government is too sympathetic.
First the "Fence," Now The Trench?
In the West Bank, they have "The Fence," actually a complicated and convoluted barrier composed of concrete walls up to 25 feet high lined with guard towers in some places and barbed wire in others.
Now, Israel wants to dig a trench 80 feet deep to block off Gaza from Egypt. Does anyone actually believe that the so-called withdrawal from Gaza is not in name only?
As if that wasn't enough, check out this article in the Jerusalem Post which indicates that Israel plans to have a "remote control" border with Gaza which would include "computerized observation posts that would automatically spot and kill attackers."
Disaster In Israel/Occupied Palestine
Ariel Sharon has reneged on a promise to the U.S. not to attempt to assassinate Yassir Arafat (Boston Globe). While every step he takes makes me predict that things will only get worse, I'm somehow always surprised when it does. Things are about to get much much worse. Bush can't be Ariel Sharon's dancing bear. I know he's a moron, but since when did he start putting Israel ahead of the U.S.? I know he wasn't elected, but he's got the job and it's his job to look out for our country, not to empower Israel to carry out its ethnic cleansing operation.
